AES Andes has received unanimous environmental approval for its Cristales photovoltaic project, along with an energy storage system (BESS) of up to 542 MW for five hours. Located in the Antofagasta commune, approximately 220 kilometers east of the regional capital, the initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable energy production in Chile.
The project, endorsed by the Environmental Evaluation Commission, entails an investment of up to US$710 million. It includes the construction of the Cristales substation and a high-voltage transmission line (220 kV) to facilitate energy evacuation. Construction is slated to commence in the fourth quarter of 2024, with commercial operation expected by 2028.
Javier Dib, CEO of AES Andes, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "The approval of this project allows us to continue accelerating Chile's energy future through new renewable ventures, reinforcing AES's leadership in sustainable energy transition." He further emphasized the company's commitment to innovative solutions like energy storage systems, enabling the utilization of solar energy produced during the day for nighttime consumption, thereby optimizing renewable resources and minimizing waste.
