Atlántico's impressive potential for developing solar and wind energy projects on both land and sea could establish it as the central player in Colombia’s energy transition, as highlighted by Governor Eduardo Verano.

The department is already at the forefront, with ten solar projects that will collectively add around 1,000 megawatts of capacity by 2025. Among these, six projects are currently in development, one is under construction, two are in testing phases, and one is ready to start construction. These projects span five municipalities: Barranquilla, Galapa, Malambo, Baranoa, and Sabanalarga. Notably, Enel Green Power’s Guayepo I and II solar parks will contribute a substantial 486.7 megawatts with over 820,600 solar panels.

Governor Verano emphasized the importance of creating conducive legal, social, and economic environments to actualize this potential during his speech at the III ACP Forum: Sustainability Facts. Additionally, the government’s 'My Great House' program aims to improve housing for 10,000 families over the next four years by promoting solar energy use in homes.

Beyond solar energy, Atlántico is also exploring offshore wind energy with plans for a $300 million park in the sea, covering turbines, substations, wiring, network connections, maintenance, logistics, and necessary environmental permits. Furthermore, the region shows promise for green hydrogen production, although investor interest is still needed to kickstart these initiatives.

Governor Verano pointed out that realizing the region's energy potential requires more than just having resources; it necessitates establishing the right conditions for development. Initial investments for green hydrogen infrastructure, including port facilities and production and storage technologies, are estimated at $55 million.

By creating the necessary conditions and harnessing its renewable resources, Atlántico is positioning itself as a leader in Colombia’s sustainable energy future.
