Argentina and the United States have signed an Instrument for Cooperation on Critical Minerals, formalising a bilateral framework aimed at strengthening collaboration on the supply, processing and sustainable development of minerals considered essential for energy security and the global energy transition.

The instrument was signed in Washington and represents a new step in bilateral relations, reflecting shared interests in reinforcing resilient and diversified supply chains for critical minerals.

A Bilateral Framework on Critical Minerals

According to Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the cooperation instrument establishes a formal framework for dialogue and coordination between both countries on critical minerals policy. The agreement seeks to promote collaboration across different stages of the value chain, including exploration, production, processing and supply.

The instrument also provides for the exchange of information and best practices, with the objective of strengthening transparency, sustainability and long-term cooperation, in line with each country’s regulatory frameworks.

Strengthening Supply Chains and Strategic Cooperation

Critical minerals play an increasingly central role in clean energy technologies, energy storage systems and industrial transformation. In this context, the agreement reflects a shared interest in improving supply chain resilience and reducing vulnerabilities through international cooperation.

The framework aims to support responsible mining development and encourage investment, while reinforcing coordination between public institutions and creating favourable conditions for private-sector participation.

Argentina’s International Engagement

The signing of the cooperation instrument aligns with Argentina’s broader strategy to deepen international engagement on strategic resources and position the country as a reliable partner in global critical mineral supply chains.

By strengthening cooperation with the United States, Argentine authorities seek to enhance institutional coordination, attract investment and support the sustainable development of mineral resources linked to the energy transition.

Minerals and the Energy Transition

As global demand for critical minerals continues to grow, international agreements are becoming a key tool for ensuring secure, transparent and sustainable access to these resources. The Argentina–United States cooperation instrument highlights the role of diplomacy and bilateral frameworks in addressing the challenges associated with the energy transition.

Officials from both countries described the agreement as a platform for long-term cooperation, with the potential to support energy security, industrial development and shared climate and sustainability objectives.
