Genneia Commits US$110 Million to New Solar Park in San Juan, Strengthening Argentina’s Energy Transition

(The Net Zero Circle, London – 12 May 2025). In a significant move towards decarbonising Argentina’s power matrix, Genneia, the country’s leading renewable energy company, has announced a US$110 million investment in the construction of the San Juan Sur Solar Park. This marks the company’s fourth photovoltaic project in the province, reinforcing its leadership in clean energy generation across Argentina.

The new facility, located in Sarmiento Department, will have an installed capacity of 130 MW and is expected to create around 300 jobs at the height of the construction phase. Once operational in the second half of 2026, the project will contribute meaningfully to Argentina’s net-zero ambitions.

Smart Technology Driving Efficiency

The solar park will span 500 hectares and be equipped with 250,000 bifacial solar panels, capable of capturing both direct and reflected sunlight. This cutting-edge technology boosts energy efficiency and output, helping Genneia deliver reliable and sustainable power to the national grid.

The San Juan Sur project will generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 90,000 homes and will prevent the emission of approximately 160,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, significantly reducing the environmental footprint of power generation in the region.

Supporting Mining and Regional Growth

According to Bernardo Andrews, Genneia’s CEO, this development is strategically aligned with the needs of the local economy:

“This new project represents a strategic step in strengthening our footprint in San Juan and supporting the mining industry, one of the province’s key economic drivers.”

He added that once the park becomes operational, Genneia will have installed 350 MW in the province, underscoring its long-term commitment to energy transition, regional development, and the sustainable supply of power to large industrial consumers.

San Juan’s governor, Marcelo Orrego, praised the initiative, calling it “excellent news” for the province:

“We are not only promoting a cleaner energy matrix but also fostering local employment and sustainable economic growth for all San Juan residents. It highlights our pioneering role in renewable development, making full use of our most abundant natural resource – the sun.”

Genneia’s Expanding Renewable Portfolio

The San Juan Sur project forms part of Genneia’s broader 2022–2026 investment plan, which will total nearly US$900 million. This strategy includes strategic wind and solar developments such as the La Elbita wind farm in Buenos Aires, and other solar parks in Sierras de Ullum, Tocota III, Malargüe I, San Rafael, and Anchoris across San Juan and Mendoza provinces.

With these initiatives, Genneia is on track to exceed 1.7 GW of installed renewable capacity by 2026, cementing its status as Argentina’s undisputed leader in clean energy generation.
