Angola, 29 May, 2024 (The Net-Zero Circle) - Portugal's MCA and Angola's Ministry of Energy and Water (MINEA) have recently unveiled a significant solar photovoltaic (PV) park in Moxico province, Angola. This new facility, known as the Luena Photovoltaic Park, has a capacity of 25.3 MWp and represents a substantial investment of EUR 36.9 million.
The park is equipped with 43,680 solar panels, which are expected to supply electricity to approximately 59,483 residents. This project is part of a larger initiative by MCA, in partnership with the US firm Sun Africa, to construct seven solar parks across Angola. The Luena facility is the fourth to be completed, with the remaining three expected to be operational by the end of the year.
This endeavour aligns with the Angolan government's "Energia Angola 2025" strategy, which aims to enhance rural electrification and diversify the nation's energy sources. The goal is to provide about 77% of the rural population with access to electricity, a significant step towards improving living standards and promoting economic development in these areas.
The successful completion of the Luena Photovoltaic Park not only marks a milestone in Angola's renewable energy journey but also highlights the fruitful collaboration between local authorities and international companies like MCA and Sun Africa. This project exemplifies how targeted investments in renewable energy infrastructure can drive progress and sustainability in emerging economies.
