Incoming Mexican President Appoints Renewable Energy Expert as Energy Secretary

Mexico's President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum has named Luz Elena González, an expert in sustainable development, as the new Secretary of Energy. González's expertise in renewable energy and finance is expected to benefit the department’s collaboration with state-run companies like the Federal Electricity Commission and Pemex, the national oil company.

After the announcement, González emphasized her commitment to an energy policy that balances national sovereignty with advancing the energy transition. She expressed her dedication to serving the Mexican people through her social media platform, X.

Sheinbaum, who will be Mexico's first female president after a decisive election victory, previously worked with González during her tenure as mayor of Mexico City, where González handled finance and administration. In her new role, González will also chair the board of directors for Pemex and join the board of the national electricity utility provider CFE. Her appointment comes as Pemex faces significant debt and Mexico grapples with meeting power demands amid record-high temperatures and recent blackouts.

Pablo Zarate, senior managing director at FT Consulting, noted on LinkedIn that González’s appointment, paired with a credible CEO for Pemex, could form a noteworthy team, distinct from previous administrations.

Additionally, Sheinbaum has announced other key cabinet positions: Jesus Esteva as Transportation Minister, David Kershenobich as Health Minister, Raquel Buenrostro as head of the Federal Comptroller’s Office, and Edna Vega Rangel as Agrarian Development Minister.
