In the Cuban province of Ciego de Ávila, a significant energy transition is underway. As part of the Cuban State Plan to Confront Climate Change, the province is at the forefront of adopting renewable energy sources. The program, known as Tarea Vida, aims to counteract the impacts of climate change and move towards a more sustainable future. One key initiative within this strategy is the implementation of the Morón photovoltaic park, which will soon add 15.75 megawatts to the region's electricity generation capacity. This measure not only represents a step forward in Cuba's energy independence but also significantly contributes to reducing polluting emissions.

In addition to electricity generation, the shift towards renewable sources has a direct impact on the daily lives of thousands of people in Ciego de Ávila. The transition to a cleaner energy matrix has enabled the conversion of 86 water pumping stations to solar energy, resulting in a monthly saving of over 31,000 litres of fuel and the mitigation of approximately 45 tons of emitted polluting gases. This measure not only ensures a more reliable water supply for the population but also promotes a healthier and more sustainable environment.

The adoption of photovoltaic solar energy is not limited to water supply alone. It extends to various sectors, from tourism to agriculture. Hotels, childcare centres, and public buildings are increasingly integrating solar panels to meet their energy needs. Even in agriculture, solar-powered electric fences are being used, demonstrating the versatility and potential of this technology. Looking to the future, Cuba has set ambitious goals: by 2030, it is expected that clean energy will represent 29 percent of the national energy matrix. This commitment reflects the Caribbean country's determination to lead the way towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
