On the occasion of World Meteorological Day, Egypt celebrates a notable achievement in the realm of environmental stewardship. The Egyptian Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) has announced that Egypt secured the 22nd position among 63 countries in the prestigious Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) for the year 2024. With a commendable score of 61.8 points, Egypt's ranking underscores its commitment to combating climate change on the global stage.

The CCPI, issued by the German Watch corporation, acknowledged Egypt's significant strides in promoting renewable energy initiatives, particularly in the expansion of solar and wind energy projects. Egypt's dedication to fostering a sustainable energy landscape has positioned it as a leader in the Middle East and North Africa region, trailing only behind Morocco in the rankings, as confirmed by the IDSC.

Despite its noteworthy achievements in renewable energy, the index also highlighted Egypt's continued investment in fossil fuels, particularly fossil gas. While the country seeks to balance its energy portfolio, there's a concerted effort towards transitioning towards cleaner energy sources.

Denmark clinched the top spot in the index, although no country managed to attain the coveted "very high" ranking, leaving the top three spots vacant. Following Denmark, Estonia and the Philippines secured the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.

Egypt's climate action plan includes ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors. Notable among these targets is the aim to slash 65 percent of emissions from oil and gas, 33 percent from electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, and seven percent from the transport sector by 2030 compared to baseline levels.

The CCPI, published annually since 2005, serves as an independent benchmarking tool to assess the climate protection efforts of nations worldwide. It not only enhances transparency in international climate politics but also fosters a spirit of collaboration by facilitating comparisons of climate protection endeavors and progress across countries.

Egypt's ranking in the CCPI reflects its unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and underscores its pivotal role in the global fight against climate change. As the world grapples with the pressing challenges of climate variability, Egypt's proactive approach sets a commendable example for nations worldwide, signaling a collective resolve to safeguard our planet for future generations.
