Botswana, traditionally dependent on South Africa and Zambia for electricity, is embarking on a transformative journey towards energy independence and sustainability with the aid of Scatec, a Norwegian independent power producer. The launch of the Mmadinare solar farm marks a significant milestone in this quest. The presence of President Mokgweetsi Masisi at the project's inauguration on March 22 highlights Botswana's dedication to decarbonizing its energy sector.

Scatec's involvement signifies a pivotal shift in Botswana's trajectory towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. The project, encompassing two phases with a total capacity of 120 MW, entails an investment of 104 million dollars. A significant portion of this investment is allocated to the engineering, procurement, and construction contract. Furthermore, Scatec's South African division is entrusted with the operation and maintenance of the facility for a duration of 25 years.

Anticipated to offset approximately 48,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, the Mmadinare solar power plant will supply electricity to around 20,000 households each year. Financing for the project, amounting to $68 million, has been secured through debt raised from Rand Merchant Bank and the International Finance Corporation.

This initiative represents a crucial step towards diminishing Botswana's reliance on neighboring countries for electricity. By embracing renewable energy sources, Botswana is paving the way for a more sustainable and economically vibrant future.
