Tango Solar plans to channel US$1.7 billion into a groundbreaking green hydrogen project in Sinaloa, aiming to push the boundaries of renewable energy within the area. This investment is expected to transform Mexico's approach to energy, paving the way for more sustainable options and supporting worldwide environmental initiatives.
Named the Tango Solar North, this venture will feature both a solar park and a hydrogen production facility, utilizing electrolysis for operation. Founders Olivier Crambade and Philippe Michel Esposito highlighted that this financial commitment encompasses a detailed timeline including 5.5 years for development and construction, 40 years for operation and maintenance, and a final phase of dismantling over two years.
The solar park is designed to generate 921MW in direct current and 787MW in alternating current, facilitating the electrolysis process to produce approximately 41,485 tons of green hydrogen from 663,759 cubic meters of water each year. This hydrogen production is vital for fostering clean energy solutions across transportation, industrial, and construction sectors, promising to bolster both regional and national socio-economic growth.
The green hydrogen generated will be transported to the El Oro compression station for truck refueling on-site. Tango Solar also plans to construct a 10.88km line to connect with the CFE substation, underscoring the project's role in reducing fossil fuel dependence and supporting Mexico's environmental goals by lowering emissions.
According to PEMEX forecasts, the green hydrogen market in Mexico is on an upward trend, expected to hit significant milestones by 2030, 2040, and 2050. PEMEX's 2023 Sustainability Plan introduces a series of green and blue hydrogen initiatives aimed at enhancing the energy sector.
The Mexican Hydrogen Association (AMH2) emphasizes the strategic importance of these initiatives in Mexico's energy transition, including pilot projects and plans for green hydrogen production escalation and potential exports. These efforts align with the North American Clean Hydrogen Regional Market goals under the USMCA agreement, showcasing PEMEX's crucial role in integrating green hydrogen into Mexico's energy framework. By 2036, a collaboration with CFE to mix green hydrogen with natural gas in power plants is expected to significantly advance Mexico's clean energy transition.
