Ternium Energises Argentina’s Green Shift with First Wind Farm in Olavarría

18 April 2025 | The Net Zero CircleTernium, the steelmaking subsidiary of the Techint Group, has officially commissioned its first wind farm in Argentina — marking a pivotal move by one of Latin America’s industrial giants into renewable energy. The launch of “Vientos de Olavarría”, located in Buenos Aires province, represents a major milestone in the company’s decarbonisation strategy and a bold statement from industrialist Paolo Rocca in the clean energy space.

The wind park enables Ternium to replace 90% of the electricity it sources from Argentina’s national grid, effectively greening the energy profile of its domestic operations.

“This is Ternium’s first large-scale renewable energy project and a key milestone in our decarbonisation roadmap. It significantly increases our renewable energy intake and advances our commitment to sustainable operations,” stated Martín Berardi, Executive President of Ternium Argentina.

Technical Milestone with Industrial Scale

The $220 million wind farm comprises 22 wind turbines of 4.5 MW each, arranged across 1,517 hectares in four distinct circuits. The total installed capacity is 99 MW, with an expected annual output of 470 GWh — enough to power approximately 130,000 households based on average residential consumption in Argentina.

Each turbine stands at 130 metres, with a total blade tip height of 205 metres — nearly double the height of the Buenos Aires Obelisk. The construction effort demanded 19 km of internal roads, 19,000 m³ of concrete, 9,160 tonnes of steel, and 145 km of medium-voltage underground cabling — all delivered through a coordinated logistics operation led by Ternium, in collaboration with Techint Group firms Exiros and Tecpetrol.

The wind farm’s performance is remotely managed from Ternium’s flagship facility in San Nicolás de los Arroyos, 450 km away, where real-time data on wind speed, direction, and power output is monitored continuously.

Driving Industrial Decarbonisation

For Ternium — Latin America’s leading steel manufacturer with operations in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, the US and Central America — the Olavarría wind farm is a game-changer. It reinforces the role of heavy industry not only as a major consumer of energy, but also as an emerging driver of the energy transition through clean energy investment.

This isn’t Techint’s first foray into renewables. The group had previously explored similar pathways through Tenaris, further signalling a top-down commitment to transform the group’s energy mix across its global operations.

A Symbol of Net-Zero Industrial Leadership

Vientos de Olavarría is more than a wind farm — it’s a symbol of Argentina’s industrial sector embracing sustainability with scale and seriousness. As global pressure mounts for carbon reduction, projects like this demonstrate how legacy manufacturers can become proactive agents of climate leadership.

By investing in renewable infrastructure that delivers immediate impact and long-term carbon savings, Ternium is setting a strong precedent — not only for Argentina, but for the entire region.
